You can find more pictures on my facebook page: World's Largest Wooden Train Collection. Thank you for your interest. The purpose of this collection is to build a replica of an industrial landscape (the collector is an economist). Hence there is no concentration on a particular toy brand such as Brio or Thomas but rather the focus is on creating a realistic looking scene. Thus, while much of the track is Brio/Thomas there are engines, cars and buildings from other vendors: these include wooden Lionel and Whittle Short Line Railroad which produced very realistic looking cars and engines.
Much of this collection was assembled in Europe. From 1990 to 2010 I traveled to Germany and the Czech Republic 35 to 40 times a year. Moreover, my German relatives live in the Fürth/Nuremberg are in Bavaria, the location of an Eichhorn factory store and warehouse. The major themes in the setup as pictured are.An automobile import/export facility including ships loading the cars, and lines of railcars carrying automobiles. The rail cars are a mixture of Eichhorn, Brio, Heros, and Whittle Short Line. Two piers with container-cranes, warehouses, and ships and barges being loaded/unloaded. The cranes and loaders are Eichhorn and Thomas. Railcars and engines are Thomas, Brio, and Eichhorn. Set across from the container terminal is an oil and petrochemical plant. This consists primarily of storage tanks and a large rail marshaling facility for tank cars. The cars, mostly yellow and some labeled Shell, are Brio, Thomas and Heros. There are also cars labeled tar. There is a barge loading facility and the entire complex is connected to an oil field.
The oil derricks are Thomas. The harbor also has a bulk loading facility where barges and railcars are loaded with material from an inland mine which is linked to the port by an overhead rail system with suspended cars. This system is Brio but was never marketed, to the best of my knowledge, in North America and was only available in Europe briefly. Next to the overhead rail line are three coal-fired power plants (Thomas) with an overhead car dumper and several long trains with various types of coal cars (Thomas, Brio, Heros). The powerplant complex is next to a steel mill with a coking plant, a rotary dump rail car unloader and two metal smelters.
On two sides of the mill are barge loaders. In addition to incoming ore and coal cars, there are trains with cars carrying steel products and pipes. The cars are wooden Lionel, Imaginarium, Brio, and Thomas. Next to the steel mill is a scrap recycling facility complete with a crane to load barges. Beyond that, there is an industrial zone with two lumber mills and a milk processing plant.
Also next to the steel mill is a cement plant with railcars and trucks carrying cement. These are Brio, Thomas and Imaginarium. The cement plant is next to a surface mine which has bulldozers, front-end loaders, and power shovels. Equipment includes track and ballast cleaning cars, and cranes (Brio and Thomas).
Adjacent is a large area for passenger trains including round houses, repair sheds, and train washing facilities. The passenger trains are Thomas, Brio, Wooden Lionel and Whittle Short Line.
The large multi-level passenger station together with a bus, light rail and street car terminal is inspired by the new central railway station in Berlin. The buildings are Thomas, Brio, Tesco, and Eichhorn. Adjacent to the rail station is a town. The roads are from Plan City.
It includes fire stations, police stations, gas stations. A waterworks, residential and commercial buildings as well as houses. These are Brio, Thomas, Plan City, and Eichhorn. The town has a zoo with numerous animals. This is produced by Brio and Eichhorn.
Also next to the town is an airport with a passenger terminal, hangars, a control tower, and a fire station. The planes and buildings are by Brio, Thomas, and Eichhorn. Still under construction is a rural area with farms, grain elevators, and barns. Associated milk cars, cattle cars, and farm equipment are by Brio, Thomas, Imaginarium, Heros, and Eichhorn.
Also still under construction is a hilly forested area where trees are being harvested and loaded on to trucks and railcars. There are also several mines including a coal mine with two coal loaders. The buildings, equipment, and vehicles are from Brio, Thomas, Eichhorn, and Heros.
